53. ArmaghNestling among the gentle hills of the Orchard County of Armagh is the ancient City of Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland. A casual glance suggests a typical Ulster town, but a closer look reveals a city which boasts two Cathedrals and magnificent instituations such as the Royal School, St Patrick's Fold, the classic Courthouse and an observatory and Planetarium of world class status. Long before St Patrick chose Armagh as a base to spread Christianity, the area was already a centre of power and influence - for 700 years the kings of Ulster had their royal capital at nearby Navan Fort. Today's visitor can discover its archaelogy and mythology at the Navan Centre. Turn any corner in Armagh and you will see superb terraced house, both grand and quaint. And at the heart of this Georgian city lies the famous Mall, an island of lush green in a sea of stone.A map of the area is available: Click here Services in Armagh Bed & Breakfasts | Hotels | Car Rental | Vacation Packages | |
54. BessbrookOne of the earliest of the model villages associated with the Industrial Revolution, the mill village of Bessbrook was founded in 1845 by John Grubb Richardson, a Quaker linen manufacturer, to house workers at his huge flac mill. Solidly built houses with slate roofs are ranged in terraces round two squares linked by a broad road. Both squares have a green in the middle. The Richardsons built schools, a butcher's shop, dairy, dispensary, savings bank, village hall and several churches but no pub, pawnshop or police house, these last three being deemed undesirable and/or nexessary. Everything was built of granite quarried nearby, and flax for the mill was grown locally in lagre quantities. An eighteen arch viaduct, built in 1851, still carries the Belfast Dublin railway Services in Bessbrook Car Rental | Vacation Packages

55. CraigavonSt Patrick made Armagh the centre of his mission in Ireland in the fifth century. Craigavon is very thoroughly signposted from the M1. Turn off at junction 11 for a look at the province's first 'New Town', designated in 1965, and named after James Craig, Lord Craigavon (1871-1941), first prime minister of Northern Ireland. 56. CrossmaglenThe south Armagh hills peter out at the border in small rock strewn, stone ditched fields fringed with yellow whin, beyond the Dorsey ( a pre Christian defensive earthworks contemporary with Navan Fort), down towards Crossmaglen. This village has an exceptionally large market square, an army base and a reputation for, among other things, horse breeding and handmade lace.
